5 Typical Questions Related To Applying For a Vietnam Visa

A very common question asked by travellers to Vietnam is whether you need to apply for a visa – and also, the fastest and most efficient method.

In the case of the majority of travellers to Vietnam it is necessary to organise a Vietnam visa. However, there are a few countries (see below) that get a short-term exemption with the option to visit Vietnam for a stay of up to 30 days without needing to apply for a visa.

Our cheap visa guide to Vietnam lists five of the common questions that are typically asked in relation to the Vietnam visa:

1) Do I need a visa for Vietnam?
The majority of travellers to Vietnam will need to organize an entry visa. However, there are a few countries that receive short-term exemption from the visa requirement.

The countries that benefit from visa-free travel include: Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Laos for a period of up to 30 days; the Philippines for a period of up to 21 days; the UK, Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, Spain, Norway, Italy, Finland, Russia, South Korea and Japan for a period of up to 15 days; and Myanmar and Brunei for a period of up to 14 days.

However, for citizens of the visa exempt countries that plan a Vietnam stay for longer than the agreed visa-free period, it would be necessary to organise a full visa via a local Vietnamese embassy, an e-visa, or a visa on arrival.

Also, anyone travelling to Vietnam that is not listed on the exemption list, they will need to arrange the appropriate entry visa to match your travel itinerary.

2) Where can I get my visa?
For citizens of most countries (most EU, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, US, UK) travelling to Vietnam, there are two major choices to apply for the visa.

Use the traditional method of visiting a local Vietnamese embassy or consulate to organise the visa. This is likely to be the more expensive option and the application time-frame is in the region of 7 days. But, it is possible to apply up to 6 months before arriving in Vietnam to make it possible to get prepared well in advance of the travel date. Also, this kind of visa application can be made in person, by email or by post – but this will vary with the different embassies.

Or

Apply online using the Vietnam visa on arrival (VOA) method. This is a simple and cheap alternative to applying via a Vietnamese embassy. In order to organise the visa on arrival it is necessary to use a third-party visa agent or tour operator based in Vietnam. They help with issuing the official letter of approval, which isn't a full visa, but a letter that lets you travel and board a flight to Vietnam and the actual visa is obtained on arrival at the designated airport in Vietnam.

Also, a third option is the Vietnam e-visa which was introduced in early 2017 and a practical option for citizens from 40 countries for the single-entry trip of up to 30 days. The e-visa is available to citizens from:

Azerbaijan, Japan, Kazakhstan, Brunei, Sweden, Myanmar, Chile, Czech Republic, Philippines, Russia, Denmark, France, Romania, Bulgaria, Norway, Peru, Cuba, Colombia, Timor Leste, Venezuela, Uruguay, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovakia, Finland, Belarus,  Armenia, Spain, Ireland, Mongolia, South Korea, Panama, Italy, Greece, Germany, Argentina, China, United Kingdom, and United States of America.

3) What documents do I need to apply for a Vietnam visa?
The Vietnam visa is relatively easy to apply for but travellers will need to submit the required documents requested by the local authorities.

For travellers applying for the visa via a Vietnamese embassy or consulate, you will need to submit the following:

A visa application form (downloaded from the official website or picked up in person from the embassy), the travellers original passport with at least 6 months remaining, a recently taken passport sized photo, and the payment to cover the cost of the visa.

Also, the documents are quite similar with the visa on arrival and include the entry/exit application form (can be downloaded or completed at the airport), 2 passport sized photos, original passport (6 month remaining), and the pre-arranged letter of approval. Plus, there is also a stamping fee due at the airport, $25/$50 depending on the type of visa. This payment must be paid by cash in USD or VND.

4) Do I apply for a single-entry visa or multi-entry visa?
The kind of cheap visa to Vietnam that you apply for will depend on your travel itinerary.

Single-entry visa: this visa is a practical choice for the tourists that plan to travel solely within the Vietnam borders. If you do leave the country at any point while holding this visa, you will need to re-apply for a new visa to get back in Vietnam.

Multi-entry visa: this visa is useful for travellers that want the flexibility to enter and exit Vietnam as they like. This is certain to appeal to the Indochina tours that include not only Vietnam but also travel in neighbouring countries such as Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.

5) Is the Vietnam visa on arrival an option for land-border entry?
No, the Vietnam visa on arrival is only a practical option for travellers that plan to arrive via one the country's international airports – Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Danang, or Nha Trang.

If you intend to enter Vietnam via a land-border or seaport, you will need to organize a visa in advance via a local Vietnamese embassy or consulate or an e-visa which is the latest option for applying for a Vietnam travel visa.
