Quang Binh Travel Guide

Quang Binh Travel GuideQuang Binh is a province in the North Central Coast of Vietnam. With an area of 8,065.8 square kilometers and population of 857,818 inhabitants, the province is one of the popular stops of foreign and Vietnamese travelers every year. It shares the border with Laotian province in the west, East Sea, Ha Tinh Province in the north and Quang Tri Province in the south. Its famous landscapes include Phong Nha Cave, Ke Bang, Nhat Le beach and so on.

With 2 beautiful beaches with blue water, yellow sand  like Nhat Le and Da Nhay, Quang Binh attracts thousands tourists coming to visit every year. Especially,  Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park has been recognized as the World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2003. Located at the north of the majestic Truong Son range in central Quang Binh province is one of the world's two largest limestone regions  of 14 caves inside the limestone mountain created by the river underground with the length nearly 14.000 meter .

Phong Nha - Ke Bang is home to archeological and historical relics, such as an ancient hieroglyphic script of the Cham ethnic minority, King Ham Nghi's base built for the resistance war against French colonialists in the late 19th century, and the Xuan Son ferry station, Ho Chi Minh Trail and Road 20 used during the US resistance war.

Things to do

Tien Son Grotto

Tien Son GrottoThe site is now on the list to be recommended to UNESCO for recognition as a World Heritage Site.

Tien Son Grotto was discovered in April 1935 in the limestone mountain of Ke Bang. It is about 400m away from the famous Phong Nha Grotto and at a height of 135m.

Tien Son Grotto is more than 980m long. Going into the cave for about 400m, visitors will see an abyss, about 10m deep. Then comes another part of the cave, about 500m long is rather dangerous for walking. At present, nearly 400m of the cave have been installed with lighting system to make it safe for visitors.

Some look like a man or an animal, and there is one that looks like the Learning Tower of Pisa in Italy. On the cave ceiling, there are glittering gold and silver-like veins. Some stalagmites produce an echoing sound when slightly knocked.

Limber Howard, Chief of the British Royal Team of Cave Researchers, who visited and made studies of the site, said that Tien Son Grotto may have been formed tens of millions of years ago. A river ran through the limestone mountain and eroded it. Then huge rocks fell, separated the mountain and form the cave. An under ground river ran through the lower part of the mountain, creating Phong Nha Grotto. Thus, Tien Son Grotto is older than Phong Nha Grotto and they do not link with each other. Geographical tectonics in Tien Son Grotto is rather stable.

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National ParkPhong Nha – Ke Bang National Park lies in Quang Binh Province - the central Vietnam. Covering an area of about 200,000 hectares, Phong Nha – Ke Bang situated in Quang Ninh, Bo Trach, Tuyen Hoa and Minh Hoa districts, is 50km northwest of Dong Hoi City.

Phong Nha - Ke Bang can be compared to a huge geological museum thanks to its complicated geological structure with different categories of stone including sandstone, quartz, schist, siliceous limestone, granite, granodiorite, diorite, applet, pegmatite, etc. Phong Nha-Ke Bang is the oldest and largest tropical karst formed 400 million years during the main geological periods of the Earth, bearing the original topographic and geologic characteristics. Experiencing major tectonic phases, high mountain ranges and the depressed sedimentary basins were formed. These fluctuations have also contributed to the diversity of geology, topography, geomorphology.

Phong Nha - Ke Bang karst mountains can provide a lot of valuable information about the Earth's prolonged geological process through various periods, from the Ordovician Age - Silurian Age (about 463.9 - 430 million year ago) to the Quaternary Age (1.75 million years ago). It is also noteworthy to mention a geological characteristic – the system of underground rivers and grottos in limestone mountains.

In the non-karst geomorphologic area, there are many low mountains covered by a floristic carpet. The erosion has created a number of abrasion-accumulation terraces along the valleys of the Son and Chay rivers and at the margins of the central limestone massifs. The transition terrain consists of a diversity of rock intercalated by limestone mountains.

Tu Lan Cave System

Tu Lan Cave System, (About 40km from Phong Nha). One of the most beautiful untouched areas of Vietnam showcasing minority cultures amongst real jungle, rivers and waterfalls. There are currently 10 known caves in Tu Lan sitting untouched for thousands of years. A special permit is required to visit this area which is only available through local responsible tourism operator - Oxalis Caving Tours. This area is ripe for exploring with plenty of underground rivers and waterfalls! Tu Lan is the Ha Long Bay of Central Vietnam hidden amongst the mountains!

Son Doong Cave

Son Doong CaveThe Son Doong Cave in Vietnam is the biggest cave in the world. It's over 5.5 miles long, has a jungle and river, and could fit a 40-story skyscraper within its walls.

But nobody knew any of that until four years ago.

The newly discovered cave has been touted as the largest in the world, although other caves vie for the title of longest (Mammoth Cave in Brownsville, Kentucky nabs that title with about 400 miles of passageways) and deepest (Krubera Cave in the nation of Georgia).

A local man discovered the cave entrance in 1991, but British cavers were the first to explore it in 2009. Now, tour company Oxalis is running trial tours of the cave and accepting sign-ups for real six-day tours to take place next year.

The man who discovered Son Doong didn't go in because the entrance he found had too steep a drop. On next year's tours, visitors will rappel 80 meters to enter Son Doong.

Thien Duong (Paradise) Cave

Thien Duong (Paradise) CaveNewly paved road off the main HCM Highway provides car/motorbike/bus access. Buy 120,000 VND ticket to enter; the fee includes an English speaking guide. Just after that, separate >>optional<< ticket for non-polluting electric golf cart to the base of the stairs (if nice weather, walk along the new path of about 1.6 km instead). Approx. 500 stairs up to entrance of cave, another 100-200 stairs down inside. Stunning, tastefully lit cave features along 1.1 km of new (spring 2011) wooden pathways. It is about 70 km by road from Dong Hoi and takes about an hour and a half by motorbike. Some claim that this is among the most beautiful caves in the world.

Things to eat

Bánh Canh Bột LọcFinest flour rice spaghetti (Bánh Canh Bột Lọc) is the local specialty food there. You may know the finest flour of Hue, it is one of the Best Vietnamese Food which come from Hue and well known in Vietnam. In Quang Binh, the local residents combine this best food with rice spaghetti which is Vietnamese popular food. This combination is really luscious; I enjoyed two bowls at the first eating. It is really awesome.
