Popular Destinations for American Tourists in Vietnam

Vietnam is a mix of beautiful and natural beauty, incredible diversity, wonderful food, and welcoming people. Much has changed over the last 60 years after the end of the Vietnam War, with different ethnic minorities, hiking trails, rice paddy fields, and incredible, tropical beaches. If you have ever heard one of your friends leave for Vietnam only to return boasting on how incredible it was, now is your chance to experience the same.

1.    Halong Bay: The views of Halong Bay are not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but also one of the most beautiful natural phenomena in the world. Thousands of limestone islands make up this site, which have been eroded into pinnacles by the natural actions of the sea over thousands of years. The best way to experience Halong Bay in all it’s beauty, is to take an overnight boat tour. Whether you sleep on the boat or sleep on one of the many islands, you are sure to have an experience of a lifetime. Many of caves can be entered within Halong Bay, one being the Hang Sung Sot, which has three mammoth caverns. Enjoy kayaking, swimming, or basking in the sun on one of the islands, and even swim with phytoplankton by nightfall.

2.    Ho Chi Minh City: Even if you are one to shy away from big cities, Ho Chi Minh City is one you should definitely pay a visit to. Although the streets are crazy, filled with motorbikes and cars, it is a sight you must see at least once in your life. If you want a meal on the side of the road for $1, you can find that. If you want to go to a cosmopolitan cafe or bar, you can find that as well. The city center of Dong Khoi is small and easy to navigate, it contains a museum, a replica of Notre Dame Cathedral left over from the French colonization, beautiful architecture and the beautiful Jade Emperor Pagoda. If you are a history buff make sure to go to Independence Palace which is the spot where Northern Vietnam’s tanks stopped in 1975 to end the Vietnam war. You can also pay a visit to the War Remnants Museum which will show you the history of what occurred with the US Forces and Vietnamese people during the war. Take a visit and climb through the  Củ Chi tunnels, which the Vietnamese used during the war to hide and navigate the city.

3.    Hue: Still containing relics from the 19-century reign of Nguyen emperors, Hue is one of Vietnam’s most historic towns. Containing the beautiful Perfume River, the Imperial Enclosure is a huge complex within walls that goes on for over 2 kilometers. Take a riverboat cruise along the Rover and visit royal tombs and pagodas.

4.    Phong Nha: Make sure to take a visit to the Ke Bang National Park in Phong Nha, as it is one of the world’s best caving destinations. Being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the huge caverns display stalactites and stalagmites. There are multiple caves to visit, and the Tu Lan Cave is wet, meaning you can swim through the cave systems.

5.    Hoi An: The old town quarter of Hoi An is incredible to explore, and still contains merchant houses from the 15th century when merchants from Japan and China came to trade and purchase local silks. Don’t miss the Japanese Bridge when walking around, and the well preserved old town streets. Hoi An is also known for tailors who can make any clothing item you can dream up, from a suit, a pair of shorts, or a wedding dress, ask for what you want and they can produce it.

6.    Sapa: If you are looking for beauty, you will find it in Sapa. Bordering the Hoang Lien Mountains (also known as the Tonkinese Alps),  you can find some of the most rural areas in Sapa. Ethnic minorities such as the Hmong, Giay and Red Dzao people live in these areas, which provide a wonderful cultural experience. The terraced rice fields change colors throughout the years, and there are plenty of opportunities to trek or simply go for a day hike.

7.    Hanoi: Previously known as Saigon, Hanoi is Vietnam’s capital, and a place that any traveler will want to experience. Once again, similar to Ho Chi Minh City, the motorbikes are intense and crazy, but something you will want to experience. This is truly where you get a taste of Vietnamese city life. Head to the old town quarter, or one of the many museums. With fine art and wonderful food, Hanoi is a must see.

8.    Nha Trang: Ready for some fun in the sun? Nha Trang is where you want to go. Beautifully manicured beaches for kilometres along the shoreline of Nha Trang city is packed in the summer. Whether you want to swim in the blue oceans, or relax on the sand, there is something for everyone.

9.    Mekong Delta: In the far south of Vietnam, you will find the Mekong River. Here you can see paddy fields, mangroves, and exciting local floating markets. Can Tho is a popular town that many travelers opt to stay in as a base while exploring the Delta, since it is close to the floating markets of Phong Dien and Cai Rang. Make sure you take a trip to the U Minh Mangrove Forest and Cau Mau Nature Reserve to see beautiful birds as well as nature.

Vietnam is a country with vast diversity and contrasts. From the beautiful rice terraces to the North, the incredible beaches of Nha Trang, and the Mekong Delta in the south, you have all of the nature you could ever want to see. For city folk, you also have two major cities of Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi, as well as smaller towns like Hoi An dotted throughout the country. With the visa requirements being easier than ever, now is the time for Americans to visit the beautiful and enticing country of Vietnam.
